Such a role is marked by a passionate, uncompromising commitment to the masses, and a powerful sense of adherence to genuine social progress towards social justice. Yet the unique and integral contribution of the youth in the fight against oppression and exploitation is marred by a growing sense of detachment from social realities and disillusionment towards politics.

The situation demands and is ripe for a reinforced, reinvigorated, activist contribution from the part of the youth. And the solution is, as always, going back to the masses – to the line of the workers, the oppressed and the marginalized – and joining them in the struggle against capitalism, imperialism and commercialization.

Out of this political necessity, comes a radical response: SPARK, the Samahan ng Progresibong Kabataan, which shall serve as a venue for the youth to realize its integral role in shaping history by linking it to the struggle of the masses, of the workers, and of all marginalized sectors in society.

Now is the time for honoring the youth that came before us. Today, we accept the burden – the glory – of being counted among the progressive youth: the movers of change, the shapers of history.

Now, more than ever, we must keep the fire burning.
